      Caring for your Rosewood

      By: Jennifer W

Congratulations! You have chosen to furnish your home with one of the most beautiful and luxurious choices in hardwood furniture.

To start, you should check that you have the proper wood – otherwise, the rest of this guide is pretty much useless. By proper wood, we mean that the wood was kiln-dried properly before manufacturing. The final product should also have a moisture content of about 6 to 7 percent, no more than 10 percent. If the drying process is not strictly controlled, your rosewood could contract and split. A common consequence, the “ripple effect,” occurs when changes in humidity and temperature between the factory and your home lead to wood shrinkage. The furniture in such a case would suffer both in appearance and durability.

You need not worry about your purchases from Rosewood Furniture Inc. however, as our manufacturer applies the highest standards in producing pieces of unsurpassed quality.

Secondly, understand that the lacquer used is “natural,” produced from a tree indigenous to China. Up to ten layers of the lacquer then seal and protect your furniture, while allowing the wood’s natural grain pattern to shine through. While the lacquer is heat, water, and alcohol resistant, you should still clean up any spills right away with a soft cloth or really absorbent paper towels.

Routine cleaning care is easy. You usually can use just a soft dry cloth to dust, or cloth damp with water to clean. No chemical detergent is necessary; avoid multipurpose cleaners. A quality linseed oil based product may be used. Your best choice would be Old English brand oil. Apply a little over the surface of your furniture with a soft cloth, then let the oil soak in for a few minutes before polishing with a dry soft cloth. This procedure will leave your rosewood pieces with a warm gorgeous glow. Be careful not to use too much polish, which can cause a filmy layer to develop on the wood’s surface.

Third, stay mindful of heat. Hot surfaces such as those of dishes/pots can damage your furniture’s exterior, so do use coasters and other protective mats. Also, do not place your furniture very close to fireplaces, heater, and radiators. Avoid direct sunlight as well.

Lastly, handle your rosewood with care when moving. Lift pieces by their core and stronger points. For example, move a chair by grabbing hold of the seat rather than its arms. Also, avoid dragging furniture and possibly weakening its legs; lifting is safer for the pieces.

These points apply toward all fine solid wood pieces. With this knowledge and a little care, you will enjoy your luxury furniture for generations to come.
